Why and how I budget

Why do I make a budget? I’ll tell you. Because I like to spend money, and if I see all that money in my account, I think “dang, that’s a lot of money! I’m going to go shopping!” Then I spend lots of money and don’t have money for important things, like rent and bills and all the stuff I need to live. That’s why I make a budget. My husband Josiah and I use a template that we found for google docs. Each time we get paid, we make a budget. We budget out tithe, rent, utilities, groceries, gas, you know, all the necessities. We have a few “rolling” budgets. These are budgets that always have money going in and going out, such as our grocery budget. We put in money, and when we go shopping, we put in how much we spent and it automatically gives us the differences. I like having our budget online, because we can access it anywhere that we are. Budgeting is so important because if you don’t do it, it’s so easy to spend money on things that you don’t need and then you have to scramble to get the money to pay rent or make a car payment. Making a budget is wise and is definitely my first recommendation to anyone wanting to be better with their money. Every dollar must have a place that it is going to. We zero out our budget, meaning that after we finish putting our money into different categories, we have zero left over. Every dollar has a name. We know exactly where our money is going to go.

Here’s an example of what our budget looks sort of like. I wish we could save that much and put that much into all those categories! But we have a lot more bills than that! But I hope you get the idea.
